When they were thirty feet away, Bo hit the brakes and turned the vehicle hard, rear wheels sliding toward the dragon. Gritz accelerated the momentum, pulling the left lever as hard as he could, the wrecking ball swinging wide at the dragon. It didn’t have the range to hit the beast, but that wasn’t the point. Jack vaulted off it at the end of its arc, using the ball’s momentum to help him dive to the dragon. In mid-air, he used quickdraw to unsheathe both legendary shortswords, the radiant sword nearly vibrating in his hand in anticipation of what would come, as if Marigold’s spirit still lingered in the weapon.

Syllgoth turned her attention from her fight just in time to see the middle-aged, overweight man with magnificent hair fluttering in Fabio-style perfection diving at her, shortswords extended. Before she could react, the blades slid easily into her long, scaled neck. Neither weapon had an issue puncturing the darkened scales, and when the radiant weapon buried itself into her, she bellowed in pain. Shadow gushed from the neck wound as Jack dangled from the blades. She shrank in size before his eyes until he was only a few feet off the ground. Unable to hang on any longer, he pulled his weapons out of her with a grunt, falling onto his back, the wind knocked out of him.

His vision started to darken around the edges from the hard landing, but he saw Gooch standing on top of the wall, light coalescing in his form before discharging into a missile directed at Syllgoth. The radiant light struck her with enough force to blast her into the ground, creating a small crater and turning her back into a woman again, reminding Jack of the Wicked Witch of the West as she melted into the ground, the last shadows leaving her.

“Mother will hear of this…” she seethed. And then she was gone.
